Hence , the goverment has given highest to the construction and maintenance of Roads.
National Highways of jammu and kashmir
National Highways of Jammu and Kashmir are considered lifeline of any state/UT and country. Because these connects the the capital cities and the places of strategic importance.
In Jammu and Kashmir , there are four main highways NH44, NH244, NH144, NH1D.
- National Highway 44 / NH44 : it connects kashmir valley with jammu and rest of the country. NH44 is the longest National in INDIA, with a total length of 3745 km.
- National Highway 244 / NH244 : formerly known as National Highway 1B , NH244 is entirely in the UT of Jammu and Kashmir .
NH244 connects Batote with Khanabal. The place Doda, Kistwar, Simthan Top falls enroutre.
- National Highway 144 / NH44 : formerly known as National Highway 1C , NH144 connects Domel with Katra, it is a branch of NH44 , total length of NH44 is 79 km.
- National Highway 1D: National Highway 1D or Srinagar Leh Highway is now a part of National Highway 1 , connects srinagar with Leh. NH1D is maintained by Border Road organisation. The two highest passes on NH 1D or srinagar Leh highway include Fatu-ha and Zojila pass.
IMPORTANT ROAD LINKS OF J&K.
- Srinagar-Gulmarg road is 29 km long and connects srinagar tangmarg and Gulmarg.
- Srinagar pahalgam road is 96 km long ,it connects srinagar, pahalgam, khannabal, Mattan, Aishmuqam, and Awantipura .
- Jehlum valley road is 132.5 km long and connects Srinagar, Pattan , Baramulla, Mohra and Uri.
- Jammu poonch road is 230 long and is important from defense point of view.
- Srinagar Shopian road is 53 km long and connects Pulwama , pampore, srinagar and Shopian.
- Srinagar Baltal road is 188 km long and passes through Ganderbal.
- Mughal Road : the historic Mughal road is 84 km long. It connects buffliaz in poonch to Shopian the kashmir valley. The mughal road was historically used by Mughal emperors to travel and conquer kashmir during 16th century.
- Srinagar Bandipura road is 56 km long road and passes through sumbhal , Mansbal Lake, safapur and Ajas.
- Udhampur Dhar Road : udhampur Dhar Road is a defense road connecting Dhar with Udhampur.
JKSRTC
The Jammu and kashmir state Road transport corporation JKSRTC came into existance on 1st September 1976.
It has played a vital role in developing the economy of jammu and kashmir right from the date of its inception .
RAIL TRANSPORT IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR.
The jammu- udhampur - Katra -Qasigund -Baramulla Railway lineis is the biggest project in the construction of a mountain railway since independence.
Jammu and kashmir was brought on the Railway map of india in 1970 , when the city of Jammu tawi was connected with Pathankot with rail.
The railway line between Jammu and Udhampur was constructed by 1977-98.
The 287 km long rail line, connecting Udhampur -Srinagar - Baramulla , is vital for jammu and kashmir from the point of view of acceleration of its socio- Economic development. Promoting national integration and Strengthening infrastructure of the region.
AIR TRANSPORT in Jammu and kashmir
There are two major Airports in jammu and kashmir providing aerial transport among two regions of the union territory and the country.
Out of the two , Srinagar Airport has been upgraded as international airport named as Sheikh- ul - Alam international Airport.
The facilities of jammu airport are being also upgraded. Commissioning of Sheikh ul Alam international Airport has opened the new vistas for enhancing connectivity at international level which will inturn facilitate international tourism and promote international trade.
Recently, the Indian Airforce has started construction of 3.5 km long runway adjacent to NH44 in Bijbehara area of Anantnag District.
Water Transport.
Prior to the introduction of motor transport in the valley, Water transport was the most common mode of transport used by passengers.
The jehlun river is navigable khanabal to Baramulla, a distance of about 170 km. Doongas are used to carry 50 passengers at a time up and down the rivers and across lakes.
Khoch and bahach are used to carry heavy loads like grains , stones, bricks , timbers , sand, clay etc.
Important facts :
* 53 km stretch from jammu to udhampur has been constructed and opened to public by prime minister Dr. Manmohan singh in April 2005.
* 25 km stretch udhampur to katra has also been completed and dedicated to the nation by prime minister Narendra Modi on july 4, 2014.
* 116 km stretch from katra to to Banihal is in the process under konkan Railways corporation Limited.
* 132 km stretch from Banihal in Baramulla is also in operation.
