 People of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh


Jammu and Kashmir is one of those places that has become famous for its many sided culture. 

  The two regions namely Kashmir valley and Jammu have different people with their diverse culture and traditions , but continuously intermingling , making it a vibrant spicemen of indian unity amidst diversity. 

1). Kashmiris

1) Kashmiris : According to historians, the ancestors of kashmiris are early immigrants from india proper. Most of the people claim their descent from the Indo-Aryan Stack. 

   Religion of Kashmiris : About 90 percent of total population in the kashmir valley profess Islam. The rest are kashmiri pandits and Sikhs. 


Food of Kashmiris : Rice and Meat is the staple diet of Kashmiris and Kashmiris pride over Karam Sag, Nadru and Turnips. The tea that the kashmiris drink is called Noon Chai and Kehwa . Noon chai is salted and milked , pink in colour and is topped with lots of cream. 


Dress of Kashmiris : the Traditional dress is a long cloak which is known as pheran. 

  Men wear a turban and women a skull cap tied with a fillet in red in the case of a Muslim and white in the case of Hindu .

2).Dogras 

Dogras :  Dogras are found in plains of Jammu.  belonging to the Aryan race Dogras speak the Dogri launguage. The Dogra Rajputs who have traditionally made the Army their profession are not so big guild , they are slim, short and and have high shoulders. 

   Dogras are deeply attached to their land. They are very religious and God fearing people , they profess Hinduism. 


Food of Jammu : the staple food of Dogras is wheat, pulses , rice and maize


Dress of Dogras : Dogras wear a short coat or a free flowing shirt with pyjamas loose to the knees but tight towards the ankies. The men also wear a turban and tie a kamarband around the waist. The women wear loose shirts or jumper with pyjamas . They cover their head with the dupattas or Shawls.

3).Ladakhis 

The people of Ladakh are short statured, sturdy and belongs to the Mongolian race. 

Men usually wear a long cloak , loose trousers and woolen caps with car flaps , while the womens wear gowns, cloaks and cloth caps. 

 The Monks and Nuns of Ladakh wear a yellow cap and have shaved heads. 

people of Ladakh follows Buddhism. 

The staple food of Ladakhis is 'grim' a kind of barley. 

The people of ladakh drink a king of country liquor called " Chhang" , which is brewed from gram. 

    People of Ladakh    have a cheerful disposition and are peace loving.

4).Gujjars and Bakarwals of Jammu and kashmir. 

   Gujjars and Bakarwals constitutes a significant proportion of the population of Jammu and Kashmir. In general they have nomadic character and depend largely on flocks and cattles keeping for their livelihood. 

  Gujjars and bakarwals  are  towering and well built, with a prominently jewish cast of features. 

 The houses  in which  Gujjars and Bakarwals live are locally called as 'kothas' and 'Bandis'. 

  The food of Gujjars and Bakarwals includes milk and Milk products and Maize are the main ingredients of their diet. 

  They have a subsistence type of economy and try to produce everything which they need in life.

5).BALTI 

The Baltis are an ethnic group of Tibetan descent with some dardic mixture. They live in the Gilgit baltistan region of pakistan and smaller population also lives in Ladakh union territory. 

   Balti people spoke Balti launguage, which is a sub dialect of Ladakhi . 

The Baltis are agriculturalists , subsistence farming and Animal husbandry  are the main source of their livelihood.

  For the economic and education upliftment of SC's ST's and other backward classes Jammu and Kashmir goverment in 1986, Developed J&K ST, SC, BC corporation . The  main objective of the corporation was upliftment of its target group and to provide self employment  awareness to these sections (ST, SC AND BC CLASSES) so that they can become economically independent and self-sustaining members of the society.
