Hisorical account
The earliest administrative units in Jammu and Kashmir was called pagana. During Dogra reign the PARGANA were reorganised and named as Zilas or Tehsils. The zilas were furthur re-designed as wazarats.
On the recommendations of Sir Walter Larence , there were some readjustments wazarats in 1892.
The Wazarats were again reorganised in 1951 , due to huge of territory of the state to Pakistan in 1947.
Current scenario
Simultaneously , the nomenclature of wasarats was also changed and redesigned as Districts . For Administrative convenience the Districts were furhur sub-divided into Tehsils and Niabats.
the UT of jammu and kashmir comprises of 20 Districts , 10 Districts in jaamu region and 10 Districts in Kashmir Region. These 20 Districts are divided into Tensils, blocks, panchayats to make administration smooth.

1).DISTRICT Anantnag :Also known as Granery of kashmir valley, Anantnag District is spread over an area of 3674 sq kms. Majority of population lives in Rural areas and is mostly engaged with Agriculture. The principle crop bring Rice and Maize. Anantnag is well known for handicrafts likes Gabbas and wooden craft. Sericulture industry has a good hold among all the small household industries.

2). District Budgam :District Budgam was curved out from Srinagar in 1979. District is spread over an area of 1361 sq kms. Agriculture is the main occupation of people, Rice, wheat, oil seeds are grown in District. The only civil Airport is situated in Budgam District, which connects the valley with outer world. Besides it also provides helicopter service to kargil, karnah, and Gurez

3). District Baramulla :The district is located on the bank of river jhelum about 55 kms from capital city Srinagar. It is the largest District of kashmir valley with an area of about 4243 sq kms. This was the first district is largest producer of Horticulture products in the state. This was the first District in kashmir provide & generate electricity to large parts of the state from Mohra power project 1905.

4).District Bandipura :The Bandipura District was curved out from from baramulla in 2007. The district is spread over an area of 345 sq kms. The world famous Wular lake lends attraction to this district and provides economic activity to a large no. Of people.

5).District Ganderbal :Ganderbal District was curved out from Srinagar in 2007 . The Geographical area of District is 259 sq kms. Ganderbal district is spread over singh and the river is considered as lifeline Ganderbal District. Ganderbal is the gateway of the sky-touching , multi coloured mountain ranges of Leh.

6).District kulgam : Kulgam District was popularly known as 'cThe Rice-bowl of kashmir'', because of the huge rice production . But due to the shrinking rice fields and more horticulture activities in kulgam, Now pulwama is considered as the 'rice bowl of kashmir'. District kulgam was curved out from Anantnag in 2007, it is spread over 410 sq kms. Almost whole of the kulgam has a network of zamindari kuls, thereby attributing it the name (Kul -Gam) kul means stream and Gam means village , i,e village of streams.

7). District Kupwara: this district was curved out from baramulla . it is spread over an area of 2379 sq kms. Kupwara shares a long border with pakistan occupied kashmir (POK).

8). District pulwama: Pulwama District was curved out from Anantnag in the year 1979. The georaphical area of district pulwama is 1086 sq kms. Pulwama is famous all over the world for the cultivation of Safron. Grown mainly in the wudars of Pampore.

9). District Shopian : shopian District came into existance in 2007 , and was curved out from pulwama district. The geographical area of District shopian is 312 sq kms. Shopian district is also known as Apple Bowl of jammu and kashmirkashmir.

10). District Srinagar : srinagar is also known as venice of the east as well as the 'Nucleous of kashmir ' , situated on the banks of river jhelum. Srinagar is the summer capital of jammu and kashmir . Srinagar is world famous tourist place and is known for its lakes and Mughal Gardens. The floating market of Srinagar, is a major tourist attraction and is only one of a kind in India.
DISTRICT IN JAMMU
1). Doda District : with an area of 8912 sq km, Doda is the largest District in jammu and kashmir. District doda was curved out from Udhampur district in 1948.
2). District Jammu :jammu is known as 'City of Temples ' it is situated on hilllock, on the bank of river Tawi. The geographical area of jammu district is about 2342 sq km. Jammu is the winter capital of UT of J&k . Dogri is the mostly spoken launguage of jammu District.
3). District Kathua :- kathua is known as gateway of jammu and Kashmir. The geographical area of Kathua district is 2502 sq km. The majority of the population of District kathua is dependent on Agriculture. Dogri is the main launguage spoken by the people of Kathua.
4). District kistwar : kistwar district is known as 'Land of Sapphire and Safron' . District kistwar came into existance in 2007 . The area of Dustrcitk district is about 1644 sq kms. Safron , Apples, cherries, Apricot are grown in the district.
5). District Poonch : District poonch is also known as ' Mini kashmir '.The geographical area of district poonch is 1674 sq km. Poonch is surrounded by LOC from three sides . Historical Mughal Road connects poonch with kashmir valley.
6). District Rajouri : Rajouri was curved out from Poonch in 1968. The geographical area of District is 2630 sq km. Rajouri District is known for Desi Ghee , anardana, chikri and wooden products like spoon, combs etc.
7). Ramban District : Ramban District came into existance in 2007 , it was curved out from Doda District. The geographical area of Ramban district is 1329 sq km. The prestigious Baglihar hydro electric power project is situated in this District. 95% of the population is Rural and is dependent on agriculture. Ramban District has the least litracy rate in J&k.
8). Reasi District : reasi district came into existance in 2007 , it was curved out from District udhampur. The geographical area of the Reasi District is 1719 sq km. Chenab river flows throug the District Reasi . District Reasi has a huge potential for hydel power Generation, and it has one of the largest hydel power projects in the country , Salal hydro electric power project on river chenab.
9). Samba District : district samba came into existence in 2007 , it was curved out from Jammu District. The geographical area of Samba District is 904 sq km. An industrial grown centre has been established in District. The majority of the people of samba are Rajputs mainly sambyals and slathians.
10. Udhampur District: udhampur District is located at a distance of 66 km from jammu on the Jammi Srinagar national highway. Udhampur district has been named after Raja Udham Singh, son of Gulaab singh. The district is Rich in mineral deposits like coal, bauxite, manganese . The culture of this area is pahari which resembles the culture of other areas of DaggarDesh.
